CHALLENGE! Rap vs. Rock?

This Oasis vs. Jay-Z thing has got to stop.  Remember when people died over what was said in battle records (can't wait for the new Biggie movie).  This is just ridiculous.

Still in Love with H.E.R.

I know I've been sleepin' on what's new and good in the hip hop world, but there's nothing like coming up on some fresh joints that re-ignite that same excitement you had with hip hop back when everything she gave birth to was real and something you could connect with. Don't trip, I'm not about to start to reminisce about how good hip hop was back when, I just wanted to share a few songs that bring it all back for me.

[MP3] Common Market :: Re Fresh
There's no better song to kick off this post than this Common Market anthem where RA Scion rhymes "Deep breath, feel the steez in effect, and let the breeze refresh..." Worddd! Now download it!

[MP3] Common Market :: Connect For

Always on a positive tip, the message and the beat on this one is the type of feel good hip hop that gets its message across, yet still sounds dope.
[MP3] The Foreign Exchange :: Daykeeper
Nicolay comes correct with some buttery smooth beats that may not quite fit into the traditional hip hop category, but I had to put it up with the rest. What can I say, these days I'm a sucker for joints like these.
[MP3] Median :: How Big is Your World (9th Wonder)
I really don't know much about Median, but when I saw that 9th was on the boards, I copped this with the quickness and was not disappointed. I love the chunky bassline and easy flows of Median - definitely one to keep an eye out for in the future.
[MP3] Binary Star :: Honest Expression
Ok ok, another old one that slipped under my crappyass hip hop radar - I love it even more for the Bruce Lee excerpt. I can't believe that even back in 2000 they were rhyming about the decline of hip hop. Sad.

Rolling Over

[I guess the Youtube powers-to-be already took it down, but it's a great clip from the Rolling Stones movie "Four Flicks", where Mick Jagger is preparing his unique dance style. - MH]

Like a rolling stone, this goes out to C.

A Gift From Def Jux

{One of the coolest music videos that I've seen in a while.}

What do you get when you take Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) + Lateef (Latyrx) + Def Jux = The Mighty Underdogs. And don't forget production from Headnodic of Crown City Rockers. Also making cameos on Droppin' Science Fiction MF Doom, DJ Shadow and Mr. Lif. Why didn't the Soul Sides crew do this before?

[MP3] The Mighty Underdogs :: Status Symbol
[MP3] The Mighty Underdogs feat. Chali 2na, Tash, Raashan Ahmad and Zion I :: War Walk
[MP3] The Mighty Underdogs :: Want You Back

I don't know if MPB still checks out this blog or not, but if you do, this one is for you.

Whateva Mang!

Whatever happened to Maxwell? Did he just disappear with the rest of neo-soul? With all this "new" neo-soul going on with Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, etc. dominating the soulful airwaves, I'm starting to miss my D'Angelo. Making me dig through my old CDs to look for Voodoo and Urban Hang Suite. Is Maxie hooked on smack like I keep hearing D' is?

[MP3] Little Brother feat. Pete Rock :: Whatever (9th Wonder Remix)
{I guess this "reinterpretation" will have to hold me over for now.}

SITE IMPROVEMENTS

The GD Crew works hard to keep improving this blog. Most recently, we have not only updated our "Now In Rotation" section, but have also added a preview link, so when you click on a particular album cover icon, you will be able to preview the album and see why we have decided to put these bad boys in the rotation. Same goes for the "Seeing Sounds" or music related movie section. Click on any movie icon and you'll be able to watch the official trailer. Of course, sometimes we may not be able to find a good source for you to be able to preview the music or movie or book (especially books). And every now and then, there will be a little inside joke thrown in there. We also finally fixed the imeem player on the sidebar, so if you want to raise the volume or turn it off or whatever, you'll be able to do so without being constantly linked to purchase "Nufonia Must Fall". We must have increased Kid Koala's sales by at least double for the past 6 months! And finally, please let us know (Comments people!) if you'd rather have our sidebar imeem player on automatic shuffle, so that every time you visit us, you'll be hearing some groovy atmospheric music. OR if that just annoys the hell out of you and all you want to do is click on a video clip without having to hear some weird echo "mixing" going on. Decision '08. Vote or Die.

Play On, Playa!

Just in case you missed it, the last playlist was dedicated to the summer, but now that it's autumn and vacation time is over, just thought we'd switch it up to the Hardest Working Man In Showbiz. Unfortunately, I couldn't find very many interesting remixes on imeem.

How to do the Weekend Right

For all of you in SoCal looking for something to do this sunny weekend, we're lucky to have P.I.C. coming to bless LA with some of their big band goodness. There's definitely something about hip hop with live instruments that always gets me hyped, and when you add smooth, fun flows to a boisterous brass section, you know these cats are for real. Surprisingly, I don't think they're as big out here in the West, but hopefully that'll soon change since P.I.C. will be doing two shows in LA on September 6th and 7th. Give their songs a listen and you'll know that P.I.C. will be rockin' the crowd - so if you're in the SoCal area, be sure to head out for what I know will be a dope show.
